Everything you need, within walking distance

Some addresses put you close to what matters. This is one of them. On Michalakopoulou Street, in one of the most central parts of Athens, Stratos hotel sits near Mavili Square, the Megaron Athens Concert Hall, and the metro station of the same name. Around it, some of the city's liveliest neighbourhoods - Ilisia, Pagrati, Kolonaki - offer cafés, restaurants and shops worth your time. The city's major hospitals are close by too: Laiko, Henry Dunant, Aghia Sofia Children's Hospital and Hippokrateio. As for the historic centre, that's just a short metro ride away, and from there the city is yours to explore.

Athens: a city that never stops evolving

Some cities you visit. Athens, you feel - and you never quite stop discovering something new. Capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world, it has recorded history going back to 3200 BC. Layered and full of contrasts, it pairs ancient monuments with lively neighbourhoods, world-class museums with up-and-coming restaurants, historic cobblestone streets with modern concept stores. In Ilisia and Pagrati, right where you're staying, the city shows a more genuine side of itself: Pagrati with its youthful energy, Ilisia with some of the best restaurants around - neighbourhoods with real character, close to everything that counts. For culture lovers, Athens offers one of the richest experiences anywhere, from the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum to the Megaron Athens Concert Hall, right next door to Stratos Hotel. And the rest of Athens is still waiting.

Acropolis, Plaka, Thiseio: the classic route

The oldest route through the city is still the best one. Start at the Acropolis and the Parthenon, then continue to the Acropolis Museum, one of Europe's most important archaeological museums. Right next door, Plaka is waiting with historic churches, small taverns and folk art shops - the most traditional neighbourhood in Athens. Don't skip Anafiotika, a cluster of 19th-century houses that could pass for the Cyclades. From there, Dionysiou Areopagitou Street leads to Thiseio, where the Ancient and Roman Agora hold 2,500 years of history for you to explore.

Close to everything worth tasting

The food here doesn't need an introduction, just a short walk. Ilisia, where you're staying, is packed with specialty coffee shops, microbakeries, brunch spots and award-winning restaurants worth seeking out. A few minutes further, Pagrati has spent years landing on international lists of Athens' best food neighbourhoods, while cosmopolitan Kolonaki offers its own, even more polished spots. And if you're after something more traditional, tavernas and meze places turn up on nearly every corner of the city.

A city built for shopping

Few cities offer as much variety for shopping as Athens does, from boutiques to flea markets. In nearby Kolonaki, boutiques and concept stores sit alongside Greek designers worth your attention. Voukourestiou Street is the address for jewellery and shopping that takes its time. Ermou Street, one of the most iconic shopping streets in the world, covers pretty much everything else. Monastiraki has the flea market, for anyone after something a little different. And if department stores or malls are more your speed, Athens has both - downtown and in Marousi.

A short walk from world-class culture

A few minutes on foot separate your room from some of the city's best museums. The Megaron Athens Concert Hall, one of Europe's most significant concert venues, is just 700 metres away, with a programme running from classical music to jazz and contemporary performances. Not far off, the renewed National Gallery holds Greek and European art from the 14th to the 20th century. Over in Kolonaki, the Museum of Cycladic Art keeps 3,000 artefacts in one of the city's finest neoclassical buildings, while Pagrati has the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum, with works by Cézanne, Van Gogh, Picasso and major Greek artists.
