Springboard to Greece's historic landmarks and natural escapes

Few cities can offer this: from Patras, Delphi, Ancient Olympia and Mycenae, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are all within equal reach.

There's no need to choose which one to visit, Patras is already the starting point for all of them. Around you stretches a Peloponnese with its own character: beaches worth giving a whole day to, wineries with a story behind every label, the Kalavryta ski resort for the winter months, trails for hiking and horseback riding, calm waters for rowing and kayaking.

Your stay at Patras Smart can easily, and should, become the reason for one more day of exploring.

Upper Town: A journey back in time

The Medieval Castle of Patras, built in the 6th century AD on the ruins of the ancient Acropolis and just 800 metres from the coast, is the natural first stop for anyone wishing to discover the city's history.

The journey continues through the picturesque alleys of the Upper Town, which spreads out below it, perfect for wandering at your own pace.

Along the way, you'll find the restored Roman Odeon, predecessor to the Herodes Atticus Odeon in Athens, the 19th-century Church of the Pantokrator, the Roman amphitheatre dating to the 1st century AD, the Hammam, and the old Hospital of 1857, now home to a cultural centre.

Patras, Square by Square

The squares of Patras, together with the city's pedestrian streets, are a chapter of their own. King George I Square, the vast central square with roots dating back to the era of Kapodistrias, remains the timeless heart of the city's activity.

Here stands the Apollo Theatre, built in 1872 by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller, its interior modelled on Milan's La Scala, alongside the seven-storey Mansion of Letters and Arts, home to the Press Museum and the Museum of History and Ethnology.

Psilalonia Square, once home to the summer residences of the city's wealthy families, St. George's Square in front of the Roman Odeon, and Olga's Square, where the poet Kostis Palamas, author of the Olympic Hymn, played as a child since his house, now a museum, stood right beside it, complete your journey through the history of Patras.

Streets Made for Shopping

As the official gateway from Italy, Patras has a distinct relationship with style. The pedestrian streets of Riga Ferreou, Mezonos & Agiou Nikolaou are lined with refined boutiques and hundreds of carefully chosen shops, while larger shopping centres cover every taste and need.

From international brands to small, distinctive stores with local character, Greece's third-largest city offers a range of options that few cities its size can match.

The City of the Carnival

Patras lives the Carnival all year round, not just on the days of the events. With roots going back to the 19th century, it is the largest carnival celebration in Greece and one of the most significant in Europe. From the Opening Ceremony on January 17th to Clean Monday, the city transforms, and the streets fill with float parades, theatrical performances, dance groups, music and spontaneous happenings that go beyond any printed programme.

From Patras Smart, this energy meets you right on the street, with the city in full motion all around you. Book early, especially during Carnival season, to secure your place in this one-of-a-kind experience.
