In a pop-art space full of retro touches and easy energy, the Alexandros buffet lays out everything you need for a strong start (7:00-10:30 on weekdays, 7:00-11:00 at weekends). Pick your drink from a spread of coffees, teas and juices, work your way through cheeses and cold cuts, spoon Greek yoghurt and honey over your cereal, and help yourself to jams, eggs cooked your way, fresh breads and cakes. And of course, plenty of tasty vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options, so everyone starts the day on their own terms. We keep things seasonal too, with fruit and vegetables at their best, and cook eggs and bacon to order, so less goes to waste.

Who said you need a boat to eat on a Cycladic island? Up on the seventh floor of Alexandros hotel, the Mavili Beach, the rooftop pool with sand underfoot and Lycabettus in view, Tavern brings the Cyclades into the heart of Athens. Greek and Mediterranean dishes, fine spirits and Greek wines arrive among whitewashed walls, stone terraces and tumbling bougainvillea, at tables set with rush-seated chairs. Here the meal takes its time and the cocktails borrow the whole city for a view. Made for social gatherings and corporate events alike, Mavili Tavern is open from May to mid-October (12:30-22:30).
